Sunday School "From childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." [2 Timothy 3:15]
Because children are valuable to our Lord Jesus Christ, they are also valuable to us here at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church. Holy Scripture teaches us to "train up a child in the way he should go," with the promise that "when he is old he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6). Tim Parmenter (our Sunday School superintendent) and Lisa Cruz (our Board of Christian Education chairperson) have a wonderful Sunday School year planned for your children and grandchildren. Come and join us! Sunday Morning Classes To help train our children and nurture their faith in Jesus Christ, we offer weekly Sunday School classes. For the 2007-2008 academic year, the preschool through third grade students are learning the main stories from the New Testament as presented in the CPH book "One Hundred Bible Stories." Discussion, application, songs, games, and/or projects round out the learning and fun! The fourth through eight grade students are following the CPH curriculum "Growing in Christ." These classes, preceded by an opening in church, meet in the classrooms adjacent to the fellowship hall. Participants are grouped by age as follows: Preschool, Kindergarten, &
1st Grade 2nd – 3rd Grades 4th – 8th Grades Substitutes: Wendy Jordan, Lori Mumme, Tim Parmenter Classes begin at 10:30 a.m. and run approximately one hour. Both members and visitors are always welcome, so come and join us as we "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18)! Overview and Objectives The following PDF documents provide an overview of our Sunday School program, as well as age-specific objectives. Select one of the following to view or download:
Offering That the Sunday School children might learn about Christian stewardship and our privilege of supporting the spread of the Gospel here at Divine Shepherd and around the world, we will be collecting an offering during the Sunday School opening. 90% of this offering will support our own Sunday School program and our congregation's efforts to bring Jesus Christ to the children of this community, while 10% will be forwarded to Lutheran Heritage Foundation to support their efforts to distribute Sunday School materials to children in Southeast Asia. Attendance Awards To help the Sunday School children take pride in attending classes, learning the Holy Scriptures, and befriending each other, an attendance award system has been established. Each time a benchmark is reached, the student will receive an award. It is hoped that every student will reach the first benchmark, that most will receive the second, and that many will reach the third. Awards will be distributed to the students during the Sunday School opening. Singing in Worship Our goal is to have the Sunday School children sing in our worship services once a month. Below is a list of hymns and songs they know or are learning. Select a title to view or download:
Rally Day Our Rally Day was held on Sunday, August 26 (2007). Our worship service that morning featured a song by the Sunday School children, prayers for the ongoing Christian education within our congregation, the installation of our superintendent and teachers, and the presentation of new Bibles to our eight 3rd graders. Bolingbrook's Pathways Parade Bolingbrook's annual "Pathways Parade" took place on Sunday, September 9 (2007). Following the overall theme "Parade of Dreams", our float was modeled after Jacob's dream, in which he saw angels ascending and descending on a stairway to heaven. The participating Sunday School children dressed up as angels and sat along the stairs, while one dressed up as Jacob and slept at the foot of the stairs. Children's Christmas Program Our annual Christmas program is scheduled for Sunday, December 16, beginning at 3:00 p.m. In this program, the participating Sunday School children will retell the Christmas story through Scripture and narrative, sing several Christmas hymns and carols, and put together a new Christmas banner. Whether young or old or anywhere in between, you won't want to miss this wonderful program! Children's Retreat Join us the afternoon of Saturday, January 26 (2008), for our 3rd annual children's retreat entitled "Lutherfest." Participating children will learn about Martin Luther's birth and childhood, his thunderstorm experience and life as a monk, his discovery of the Gospel, his confession of the one truth faith before the emperor, his writings (95 Theses, Small Catechism, etc.), and his family life. Various events in his life will be acted out by the leaders. Learning sessions will be intermingled with projects, songs, food, and fun. Come and join us!
